When you
talk about Oporto it’s impossible not to think about a francesinha – a typical sandwich from Oporto with bread, sausage, meat, cheese and french fries.
I must say
that before I lived there I actually didn’t know what it was.
In
September of 2011 I moved to Porto to study at the University and I had to adapt
to the city, to the “praxes” and to new routines. With all of this happening at
the same time i just ate a francesinha on the 21st of November when I
turned 18 years old. At first I didn’t like the sauce and I thought that it was
a “complex dish” with a lot of things to eat. But, like Fernando Pessoa used to
say about Coca-Cola in 1928 – “Primeiro estranha-se. Depois entranha-se” I quickly ended up liking it.
Today, I love
this dish (I can’t wait to go to Oporto again and eat another one :b) and although
I hadn’t eaten a lot of francesinhas
such as the people of North of Portugal (I am from Viseu – center of Portugal) I
can say that the best one I ever had was the one from the restaurant “Tripeiro”!
But have
you ever wondered how this dish was created?
The francesinha
was created by Daniel David Silva that was inspired in croquet monsieur (French
toast) in his times of emigrant in France. In 1950, the restaurant of Regaleira
was the first one to serve this dish that was very simple when it was created,
with fewer ingredients.
How about
you? What is your favourite place to eat a francesinha?
P.s. I
still haven’t eaten a francesinha made in the oven! Where would you recommend to
eat one?
